CSR as Compassion, Commitment, and Custodianship

The session commenced with an inspiring address by Mr. Bharat Kumar S S, Director of Projects, Prasanthi Bala Mandira Trust (PBMT), One World One Family Mission.

He emphasized that CSR is not merely a statutory obligation but an opportunity for active participation in nation-building. While India has the necessary laws, capital, and institutional frameworks, real impact lies in convergence, collaboration, and sustained commitment across sectors such as nutrition, healthcare, education, and skilling.

He redefined CSR by stating that the “C” stands for Compassion, Commitment, and Custodianship, highlighting that every contribution carries both the faith of the donor and the hope of the beneficiary.

Strategic Vision for CSR: From Allocation to Impact

In the valedictory address, Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, Founder of the One World One Family Mission, outlined key priorities for leadership and institutions:

  • Purpose-led leadership that aligns business goals with societal good
  • Balancing CAPEX with OPEX to ensure long-term sustainability
  • Stronger alignment between corporates, PSUs, and implementation partners
  • Expanding CSR into ESR (Employee Social Responsibility) and ISR (Individual Social Responsibility)
  • Measuring success through human capital outcomes, not just financial metrics

A key insight from his address was that the effectiveness of CSR is defined not by the quantum of funds, but by the depth, continuity, and scalability of impact.

CSR Beyond Compliance: A Purpose-Driven Approach

Mr. Ayush Gupta, representing GAIL India Ltd., shared insights on the evolving role of CSR:

  • True impact must be understood through on-ground engagement, not just reports
  • CSR should go beyond compliance and be driven by organisational culture
  • Leaders must balance a corporate mindset with a community perspective
  • Long-term transformation requires multi-stakeholder collaboration
  • There is a growing need to strengthen Individual Social Responsibility (ISR)

He emphasized that impact is ultimately measured not by numbers, but by lives transformed and dignity restored.

Bridging the Last Mile: Focus on Underserved India

Dr. Palvai Harish Babu, Hon’ble MLA, Telangana, highlighted CSR’s critical role in addressing grassroots challenges:

  • CSR can act as a force multiplier in bridging last-mile gaps
  • Greater focus is needed on aspirational districts and rural areas
  • Investments in nutrition, healthcare, and education are essential
  • High-impact interventions like watershed development and irrigation can transform livelihoods
  • CSR must be seen as a partnership for inclusive growth, not charity

His perspective underscored that aligning CSR with underserved regions yields the highest social return.

CSR as a Strategic Driver of National Development

Mr. Siddharth Agarwal, Executive Director, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), reinforced the idea that CSR is an opportunity to give back and build the nation.

Indian Oil’s approach reflects this philosophy through three key pillars:

  • Sustainable Future: Net-zero goals, waste-to-energy projects, and ecological initiatives
  • Health & Human Development: TB elimination, cancer care infrastructure, and tribal health programs
  • Education & Empowerment: Scholarships for girls and support for women athletes

He described CSR as the “social energy” powering India’s development, emphasizing its role in driving inclusive and sustainable growth.

A Collective Call to Action

The session concluded with a powerful Vote of Thanks by Mr. Vivek Kumar, Chief Marketing Officer, Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.

He left the audience with three clear action points:

  • CSR must evolve from a year-end obligation to a strategic national investment
  • Success must be measured in dignity, hope, and transformed lives, not just metrics
  • The future lies in holistic, sustained partnerships, not isolated interventions

A key message resonated strongly:
India’s journey towards a Viksit Bharat cannot be achieved by government efforts alone — it requires a collective movement driven by industry, civil society, and institutions working together with shared purpose.

Conclusion

The valedictory session brought together diverse yet aligned perspectives, reinforcing a shared vision for the future of CSR in India.

The conclave concluded with a powerful affirmation:
CSR must evolve from intent to action — driven by collaboration, scalable solutions, and a deep commitment to inclusive nation-building.
