The Journey of Ragi: From Farms to Nourishing Millions, Rashi Puja at Honnavalli Hobli

Ragi, also known as finger millet, is a powerhouse of nutrition, rich in calcium and essential nutrients, while also promoting sustainable agriculture. This wholesome grain is procured, fortified, and distributed by the Annapoorna Trust to government school children across 143,000+ schools in 25 states and 4 Union Territories of India. Through the SaiSure Morning Nutrition Program, this fortified ragi mix—blended with milk or milk powder and jaggery—is provided to children as they arrive at school, ensuring they start their day with essential nourishment.

This initiative benefits 1 crore children, significantly contributing to improvements in their height, weight, and academic performance.

Where Does This Ragi Come From?

The ragi used in this program is organically cultivated by a dedicated group of farmers under “Subiksha Organic Farming Producer Organisation” to support organic farming communities, led by Mr. Anand, in Tiptur, a town in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka. These farmers are committed to sustainable practices, ensuring that the grain is grown without harmful chemicals, making it a safe and nutritious option for fortification.

Rashi Puja: A Tradition of Gratitude

Beyond cultivation and procurement, these farmers follow a unique tradition—Rashi Puja was performed on the 2nd of March 2025.

Before the harvested ragi is sent for fortification, they gather it in one place and perform a small prayer, expressing gratitude and seeking blessings for the well-being of the children who will receive this nutrition.

These farmers are offered a Minimum Livelihood Price (MLP), which is higher than the Minimum Support Price (MSP) set by the government for ragi procurement. This initiative not only ensures fair compensation but also empowers both men and women in farming communities. By receiving a price above the standard market rate, farmers experience greater financial stability and satisfaction, knowing that their efforts are valued and rewarded.

These selfless farmers not only grow the grain but also take immense pride in knowing that their efforts help satisfy the hunger of children in remote villages across India. The Ragi that nourishes 1 crore children every morning is cultivated in a small village, empowering a stronger and healthier next generation.

This initiative is a profound testament to Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family!
