Narayana Health and Annapoorna Trust: A Partnership Built Around a Child’s Morning

A nutritious start to the day can make a meaningful difference to a child’s school experience. For children who arrive at school without breakfast, morning nutrition offers a chance to begin the day with nourishment and energy.

Recognising the importance of child nutrition, Narayana Health and Annapoorna Trust came together in 2022 to support government-school children in Bengaluru through our Morning Nutrition Programme.

What began as an initiative benefiting 360 children across four government schools has gradually grown to reach more students and schools. Through continued collaboration, it has become a sustained effort to support children’s nutrition and educational journey.

We believe that supporting children takes collective participation from organisations, schools, teachers and communities.

2022: The Beginning in Rural Bengaluru

We formally launched the partnership on 28 July 2022 at a government school in Ramohalli, in the Kengeri area of Bengaluru.

The first phase covered four government schools in Ramohalli, Kethohalli, Subramanya Palya and Chikkeluru, benefiting 360 children.

Narayana Health’s CSR team partnered with us to support the initiative, recognising the importance of giving children nutrition before their school day began.

The programme also built on our earlier experience in Doddabele, where our morning nutrition initiative began in 2012.

This first phase gave us a foundation for expansion. It showed how a partnership between a healthcare organisation and a community-service organisation could help address children’s nutritional needs.

2023: Expanding to 1,000 Children

In 2023, nearby schools expressed interest in joining, and the programme grew.

By July 2023, we were providing morning nutrition to 1,000 students across 12 schools in the Kengeri area.

The official restart of the programme took place on 25 July 2023, after morning nutrition had started at the schools earlier that month.

Children received cooked breakfasts, including upma, avalakki, puliyogare and lemon rice.

This was an important step for us, taking our reach from 360 children in four schools to 1,000 students across 12 schools.

2024: Continuing the Commitment

On 29 July 2024, we officially relaunched the programme for its third year with Narayana Health at GLPS Yelachaguppe Rampura in Kengeri.

By then, we had completed two years of supporting 1,000 children across 12 schools.

Continuing showed us the importance of sustained support rather than one-time interventions. Regular access to morning nutrition helped make breakfast part of the school-day routine for the children.

It also showed how corporate social responsibility initiatives can work alongside community programmes to meet an essential need among school-going children.

2025: The Fourth Year and Further Expansion

In July 2025, our partnership entered its fourth year with the launch of the Morning Nutrition Programme at Kithiganahalli Government School in Bengaluru.

We now provide daily cooked breakfast to 1,162 students there.

The launch, held on 31 July 2025, brought together representatives from Narayana Health, Annapoorna Trust and the school community.

This showed the partnership’s continued growth and our commitment to making sure children receive nutrition at the start of their school day.

The programme kept linking nutrition with education, because children’s well-being is an important part of their overall school experience.

2026: Beginning the Fifth Year of Partnership

In August 2026, Narayana Health and Annapoorna Trust began the fifth year of our collaboration, another milestone for us both.

Our latest phase covers eight government schools and 1,185 students in Bengaluru, with freshly cooked breakfast five days a week.

We held the inaugural function on 11 August 2026 at Karnataka Public School, Sarakki, Bengaluru. Representatives from Narayana Health, Annapoorna Trust, the school and the School Development Monitoring Committee attended.

The gathering highlighted the importance of regular breakfast, food conservation and creating an environment in which children can take an active part in school.

The continued expansion reflects our shared commitment to supporting children’s nutritional needs through sustained collaboration.

Looking Ahead

The journey from our first programme in 2022 to the fifth year in 2026 shows how sustained collaboration can reach more schoolchildren.

Narayana Health and Annapoorna Trust continue to work towards a shared goal: helping children access morning nutrition so they can begin their school day nourished and ready to learn.

We also see this partnership as a reminder of how much cooperation between corporate partners, schools and community organisations matters in meeting children’s needs. To learn more about Narayana Health’s wider community work, see its CSR and sustainability report (2020).

Every school we reach is another opportunity to make morning nutrition a regular part of a child’s day. Through continued collaboration, we want to strengthen the connection between nutrition, education and children’s well-being.
