Clean and Green Awards 2024
In honour of our founder Sadguru Sri Madhusudhan Sai’s 45th Birthday, on the 26th of July 2024, the Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust delightedly announced the “Clean & Green School Excellence Award.”
This initiative was primarily aimed at fostering and building Educational Environments. It was open to all Government schools throughout the State that demonstrated exceptional achievements in maintaining the school on several criteria as mentioned below.
Important criteria for the awards:
The awards were evaluated based on several important criteria to ensure that schools meet high standards of infrastructure, sanitation, extracurricular activities, community engagement, and overall discipline.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure of the school, including premises and building, a well-defined entrance gate, and the interiors of classrooms with sufficient spacing and lighting, greenery, etc. was assessed for quality and maintenance.
Sanitation standards
Sanitation standards also played a crucial role, focusing on the toilet systems to ensure they are hygienic and functional. The overall cleanliness of the school environment such as classrooms, corridors, and common areas, were also closely examined.
Extracurricular activities
The presence and condition of facilities for extracurricular activities such as playgrounds, school halls, libraries, etc., and encouragement for sports, music, and other art forms, were considered to evaluate the opportunities provided for students’ all-around development.
Community engagements
Community engagements were reviewed by examining initiatives like rainwater harvesting and the segregation of dry and wet waste, showcasing the school’s commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
Overall Discipline
Lastly, the overall discipline within the school, reflected in how all activities are conducted, was a key factor in the evaluation process.
These comprehensive criteria aimed to recognize schools that excelled in providing a well-rounded, clean, and disciplined educational environment.
This contest was open to all Government schools throughout the State that demonstrated exceptional achievements in maintaining the school on the aforesaid criteria.
As a reward for the contest the top 100 government schools selected would be awarded Rs. 10,000 each, along with a special feature on the Annapoorna Trust website and a recognition plaque. Among these schools, there would be three prizes for best lower primary, higher primary & high school with prize of Rs.25,000/-. One identified the best among all schools, the headmaster or headmistress of this school will receive a grand prize Rs. 100,000 on behalf of the school.
Towards the latter half of June, government schools across every district of the state were sent a flyer outlining the criteria to submit a detailed report and accompanying photographs via email to the official mail ID of the Annapoorna Trust. It was gratifying to see that the flyer sparked quick responses in such huge numbers across the state, especially from the rural belt of Karnataka.
School Visits
After receiving responses, Staff and volunteers from the Annapoorna Trust made surprise visits to numerous government schools that had participated in the contest to personally validate the reports, photos, and documents submitted by the schools.
During the visit, they were pleasantly surprised by the aesthetic beauty of the government schools, particularly those in rural areas. Several schools had a small beautiful garden that looked inviting, some schools even featured gardens that looked like the India Map, Karnataka Map, and other geometric shapes and patterns.
It was heartwarming to learn that in certain schools, teachers and headmasters had taken the initiative to grow vegetables on designated plots of land. These vegetables were then used in the daily meals provided to the children, especially in districts and towns where centralized kitchen facilities were lacking.
It was also noted that in several schools, children arrived dressed in clean uniforms with a small tilak on their foreheads as if they had performed a small pooja before coming to school. These children typically come from families engaged in agricultural labor. For many of them, teachers are the primary role models guiding their conduct. The dedication shown by the teachers and principals in these schools clearly reflected their personal commitment and effort.
Clean & Green Excellence Awards Ceremony
The much-awaited day, the 27th of July 2024, to present the Clean and Green School Excellence Awards – 2024 to the winning schools was a spectacle to witness. Nearly 300 government school teachers had assembled at Sathya Sai Grama, the headquarters of the Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust.
Guru Poornima is traditionally a day dedicated to honouring Gurus. Appropriately, on the final day of the week-long Guru Poornima celebrations, the Head Masters, Head Mistresses, and teachers from these schools were honoured for their dedicated efforts toward the children and their schools.
With the presence of so many teachers, the gathering took on a truly divine atmosphere.
The Sri Sathya Sai Premamrutham Auditorium at the Sathya Sai Grama was full & the event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by our esteemed founder, Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, and Sri BN Narasimha Murthy, Chancellor of the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence (SSSUHE). This was followed by a Vedic invocation which ushered in the proceedings.
Conceived and envisioned by our Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai to uplift and support humanity through Nutrition, Education, and Health (NEH), a video was presented to highlight the collective initiatives undertaken by the organization. It demonstrated the efforts being directed towards these sectors.
To the distinguished audience, the anchors described the evolution of the Annapoorna morning nutrition program, which began 12 years ago with just 50 children and now supports 9 million + children across the country.
They also mentioned that the selection process for the awards was a significant task, requiring many Annapoorna officials and volunteers to personally visit numerous schools including those in the remote districts to ensure a fair evaluation. The team meticulously reviewed all applicants based on criteria such as infrastructure, sanitation standards, and overall discipline.
Finally, the top 122 schools were honoured with awards of Rs. 10,000 each. Furthermore, each of the 122 teachers was recognized on stage and received their certificates directly from Sadguru.

During the event, two teachers spoke & poured their heartfelt gratitude to the Annapoorna Trust for providing “SaiSure Ragi Multi Nutrient Health Mix” as morning nutrition to all government school children. The first speaker, Srimathi Parvathi Bhai Chalgeri, with 28 years of teaching experience and currently serves as the Headmistress of the GHPS Banashankari in Badami, shared insights about the school she leads. She highlighted that the school mainly caters to children from Coolie worker families in Madikeri Taluk, who work tirelessly in the fields from sunrise to sunset and walk 2 to 3 kilometres to reach school due to inadequate transportation.
The children’s diet primarily consists of leftover food from the previous night, which lacks nutrients. However, with the introduction of the SaiSure Ragi Multi Nutrient Health Mix, along with the “Ksheera Bhagya” program, proved to be a transformative intervention. In just three months, there were noticeable improvements in the children’s health and vitality. Monthly reports to the government revealed that each child gained 2 to 3 kilograms, reflecting the significant positive impact of the nutritional support. On all their behalf she offered her gratitude to Sadguru.
The second speaker of the day was from GHPS Nalluru, Karkala – Sri Nagesh, who carries 35 years of teaching experience. Sri Nagesh remarked that these awards recognize not just the school but the entire district. After the 5 Annapoorna members had visited his school, he was inspired to visit Muddenahalli Sathya Sai Grama.
He voiced his feelings saying this place was nothing short of heaven on earth. He expressed his deep reverence to Sadguru for addressing the crucial issue of hunger and for serving Ragi Malt to hungry school children, ensuring that children can study without the distraction of hunger.
It was gratifying to know that children who previously had only leftover food from the night before are now benefited nutritionally. The change has led to increased school attendance and attention in class, as well as noticeable progress in key growth metrics such as weight and height.
During the event, values-based educational content having a series of volumes customized to teach pre-school, primary, high school & pre-university students in Kannada language were also provided to all 125 awardees. The principles of Values Based Education when integrated with the formal learning system, will transform the children into better human beings.
Through this event, the Annapoorna Trust celebrated the dedication of all the government teachers and schools who put their efforts into the development of children often from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as their efforts in making their learning environment conducive.
The event uplifted our spirits and inspired us to strive for even greater heights in our mission to alleviate hunger.
